South Valley Cusco 1 Day

The tourist attractions of Cusco are characterized by maintaining a very special harmony between the natural landscapes and Incas and colonial constructions. The southern Valley of Cusco which leads to “El Altiplano” is considered a suitable tourist circuit to know great part of the Incas history.

The tour lasts an average of 5 hours, and visits the tourist attractions of Pikillaqta, Tipon and Andahuaylillas.


Pikillaqta is an archaeological pre- inca group, where we will appreciate the constructions of narrow streets and stone walls covered with lime and clay. The archaeological group of Pikillaqta is located on the south of the great capital of the Inca state, in direction of the city of Puno, at an altitude of 3.350 m.a.s.l.

The original name of this area is unknown, but strangely is baptized as Pikillaqta, quechua word that means “people of fleas”, took this name in the end of the colony time, although many chroniclers call this area Mohina, Muyna or Muyuna”.

Formerly this sector would have been occupied by the Wari culture, which was developed in the city of Ayacucho. Wari was one of the cultures more rebels from the Inca era, Wari culture resisted to belong to the territory of the Tawantinsuyo dominated by the Incas.


Tipon is an archaeological group in which highlights the large capacity of the Incas to distribute the water for irrigation in the sectors of culture, with horizontal and vertical irrigation canals that are distributed by all the staggered terraces, a center of agricultural production, very important to the Inca empire, and one of the samples more impressive of Inca hydraulic engineering.

Tipon is located at an altitude of 3.500 m.a.s.l. According to some chronicles, Tipon was an imperial palace ordered to be built by the Inca Wiracocha for his father Yawar Wacaq.

The Andahuaylillas chapel.-

located in the province of Quispicanchis, department of the Cusco, is one of the most surprising samples of the Andean religious folk art.

Its history goes back to the time of the colony during the 16th century, when the Spanish Crown sends to form the so-called reductions, which consisted in bringing together all the andean countries that lived in the heights in a single sector, so as to facilitate the work of indoctrination in the catholic religion. For that reason it was made the first buildings of small temples on foundations of Incas altars, called Huacas. And also the chapel of Andahuaylillas was built under the invocation of San Pedro Apostle, that lodge many indigenous peoples from various parts of the Andean territory.

To impose the catholic religion laws, the best way to evangelize was showing biblical passages in mural paintings, that was why they painted the inner walls of the chapel with beautiful murals; this is the reason why today is considered as the “Sistine chapel of America



Early in the morning we will pick you up from your hotel and we will travel toward the south of Cusco, on the first stop we will visit Pikillaqta, ancient construction of the pre- inca time, after a guided tour we go to Tipon, one of the Inca constructions very impressive, where we can see the wide knowledge of the Incas on hydraulic engineering, and to conclude this tourist circuit, we go to Andahuaylillas, where is located in a chapel of the colonial era, considered the chapel Sistine of America.

Finally we go back to the city of Cusco.
